Now I can’t remember the time
but it was 22 years ago.
That I first told you of my thoughts.
But I do remember that it
really didn’t blow you away.
And although you were preoccupied w/Jim
I just figured I’d lay it out there on the line.
Do you remember what you said to me
as you were turning out the door?
You said “Come see me in the Summer of ‘99”
I’ve been bouncing all around
Once in a while I’d check my watch.
Just to see what time & day it was.
And yes there have been other girls
I thought that you should know.
Someone pointed out I have been in decline
w/too much beer & too much wine.
But I’ll have you know that I’ve started to clean up
all special for the Summer of ’99.
I’ve felt like a stalker for my life.
Looking all around.
It’s been a hunter mentality
That’s carried me for this long.
But the the calender has kept me strong
For this long.
So the kids they look like mom
when she has her good day on.
And it’s not exactly a rose bed
So I heard that Jim went & took the bait
on a new model that has a lot more tread.
I’d like to ask him”Just what were you thinking?”
When he wandered out of your life, out of mind.
So I washed the Buick up, not a white horse
But to me it’s the same in the Summer of ’99.
Yeah, I know you were not ecstatic to see me.
But I thought we’d team up to tear up some bills.
And we could re familiarize ourselves
With the terrain , the peaks and the hills.
While I’m sure you need a shoulder just don’t tell anyone
But you know that I need one too.
And I hope I mean more than just killing time.
‘Cause I’ve waited my whole life for the Summer of ‘99
So if you want to take my arm
the car is waiting
And I’ll gladly take as you are, as you
will also have to take me.
And we can tear up the road or just sit and
try to repair and make what we can
And I’ll simply say you look fine in my eyes
and we can start a new page from
the summer of ‘99.
